India: Pioneering Changes and Challenges


January 2024: Abolition of 'No Detention Policy' - The Union Ministry of Education abolished the 'No Detention Policy' (NDP), aiming to enhance educational outcomes. Students in Classes 5 and 8 who fail their annual exams now can retake them within two months.

March 2024: NEET UG Controversy - The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate admissions faced significant controversy. Multiple students secured rank 1, leading to protests and a Supreme Court intervention. The exam was reconducted for 1,563 candidates.

There were five major Indian government initiatives in the field of education in 2024:


  • PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme: This initiative provides low-interest education loans to meritorious undergraduate and postgraduate students admitted to the top 860 institutions across India. It aims to ease financial burdens and ensure access to quality education for over 22 lakh students annually.

  • Pradhan Mantri Scholarship Scheme (PMSS): This scheme supports technical education by offering scholarships to students pursuing technical courses, thereby encouraging skill development and technical expertise.

Gifted Education Programme Revamp in Singapore - Singapore announced a major revamp of its Gifted Education Programme, broadening opportunities and addressing concerns about exclusivity.

September: A regional conference on vocational education and training in Asia focuses on the importance of developing strong vocational education and training programs to meet the needs of the labour market.

October: Several Asian countries launch initiatives to improve the quality of teaching and learning, including investments in teacher training and professional development.

Learning & Teaching Expo in Hong Kong The 14th edition of the Learning & Teaching Expo (LTE) in Hong Kong focused on 'Shaping Education for a World of Change,' attracting over 17,000 education professionals.
