Strategies to follow that can help educators to integrate AI-Tools within their regular Teaching....

All K-12 educators across the world are now looking for innovative ways and means to use artificial intelligence-powered technologies in the classrooms. But referring to the opinions of some experts, most of them are of the view that integrating Artificial Intelligence could start with teacher preparation programs, which can ensure the preparational readiness of the teachers to teach at a time when AI Tools are highly trending.

As per a Panel Discussion at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference, ISTE’s Artificial Intelligence in Education Preparation Program has shared seven major strategies, which are being referred to be used as a part of teacher preparation programs, with the help of artificial intelligence.

Some of the helpful strategies that can aid educators to employ AI tools at large numbers can be understood by the factors like;

1. Fostering a Universal Foundational understanding of Artificial Intelligence-related tools- Before moving into analysing the scope and means of using AI tools for teaching, all educators need to have a basic understanding of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and large language models, like the technologies used behind controlling ChatGPT and other chatbots. Also, they need to know that, Artificial Intelligence can be used in daily tasks in the form of social media and voice assistants. In such a way, knowledge, and skills to use AI within education can get integrated in such a means into the subject areas.

2. Cultivating skills to effectively harness Artificial Intelligence-related Instructional tools- There are several Artificial Intelligence-powered instructional tools available for educators to be used. Generative Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E, or other intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive assessment mechanisms, make it important to start learning to use the tools effectively. But at the same time, educators also need to be thoughtful about implementing these tools in the day-to-day classroom scenario.

3. Using the big ideas in Artificial Intelligence as a tool for guidance to inculcate K-12 AI Literacy- The Five Big Ideas of Artificial Intelligence is a framework that has been put together by ‘AI4 K-12’, which is an initiative launched by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Teachers Association. In this initiative, it was called on by the panellists to the educators for experimenting this tool as a guide for teaching AI-Literacy to Students.

4. Facilitate exploratory experiences that develop and apply AI knowledge- All students and teachers learning about Artificial Intelligence, also need to have hands-on experiences on using AI-controlled tools. There are tools already available which are helping educators to show students the principles of how AI-powered machines will help them in learning and apply AI literacy in real-world scenarios.

5. Integrating AI literacy into the existing curriculum- AI literacy needs to be taught at all grade levels and subject areas, as it was recommended by the panellists. Also, at the same time, it must be infused within the existing curriculum, instead of being considered as an add-on. In order to initiate this change, all educators need to ensure that they are using age or developmentally-appropriate practices.

6. Integrating all critical examinations of the Artificial Intelligence technology within the classroom experiences- At the time of training teachers on using Artificial Intelligence, there needs to be a critical examination of all the Artificial Intelligence-based tools. Generally, there are three major criterias that are considered with prime importance while examining AI-Tools. These can be mentioned as;

  • Equity

  • Cultural Responsiveness, and

  • Ethics.

In a way, this also means that all students need to have access to AI tools, that will support their learning by having the resources which they will require to use these tools creatively. All educators also must think about the perspectives being told and the assumptions that the use of AI tools is leading to. As an educator needs to think of the tools as well, which a student is using along with the student data.

Intentionally infusing all these approaches within the teacher preparation programme raises the requirement of the education system to be intentional in teaching such skills to preserve the manpower and intelligence contributed by the teachers working at present. But, looking at the future it also stands as a proposition that in order to initiate progress at a fast pace, it is also necessary at the same time to initiate the development that is required the present.
