What is Game-Based Learning and how can teachers adapt them to enhance the scope of learning........

Game-based learning is a computerized imitation of the real-world system, which imitates the real-world processes in various fields like sales, training, and development. This allows all trainees to develop their skills in decision-making, strategic thinking, problem-solving, market analysis, teamwork, leadership operations, and financial analysis. Game-Based Learning processes generally involve animated programs which show two speakers, whose interactions have an effect on each other and on the environment, which allows the employees to control the movements and actions of these speakers with the aim to develop some competitive skills.

In the case of understanding the use of game-based learning programmes for sales, the employees receive an imaginary business situation for making decisions on advertising, sales tips, and meeting targets. These games reflect the real business challenges that have an element of competitive advantage and uses images or data to enhance the experience of learners to incorporate data reporting for feedback.

How Game-Based Learning processes can take place?

Game-based learning processes can take place in a virtual environment or a simulated environment created by augmented reality. Virtual environments mainly resemble real-life settings, whereas Augmented Reality goes a step further to present an enhanced version of reality. Game-based learning is a teaching strategy whose use has been widely increasing, as it helps students to achieve their learning objectives, in two ways like.

Making learners tech-savvy at an early age.

Paving the way for educational technology companies to develop more learning tools.

As per a study in 2018, it was found by researchers that, the extensive use of educational games has supported to increase the mathematical learning outcomes to a great extent. Another 2018 systematic review of game-based learning highlighted that educational games do play a successful role in terms of ensuring a better understanding of the course content by students to help them in the participation process.

However, several studies have continued to show that Game-Based Learning can also positively impact students in learning mathematical calculations and languages in many ways.

Help in problem-solving- Game-Based learning can help students to solve problems by fostering skills like understanding causation, logic, and decision-making, which they can use at any part of their daily activities.

Encourage critical thinking- Research has shown that Game-Based Learning can help to improve the scale and pace of critical thinking of the students. It includes the development of independent beliefs prior to engaging in collaborative discourses to provide opportunities for guided reflection.

Increase student engagement and motivation- In a research paper written in 2019, it was found that when teachers have incorporated digital game-based learning elements like feedback, choice and collaboration in their instructional design it allows students to become more engaged and increase their motivation to learn.

Introducing situational learning- As the process of learning does not occur frequently, rather it takes place in our mind, which makes it a fundamentally social process. Thus, in such a way, it can be found that situational learning helps students to understand new concepts in the context of their social relationships.

Address needs for special education- Game-based learning positively impacts special educational processes too. In this case, researchers have found this benefit that gives students access to some individualized education plans.

How teachers can adopt Game-Based Learning? Understanding with the help of Quizziz

If a student has been able to recognize the power of game-based learning, and how it has helped them in pursuing their course of journey, it can be gradually understood with the help of a Case Study on the Software of Quizziz, and how it has helped in boosting the pace of acquiring vocabulary.

In a 2023 study involving about 69 students studying English as a Foreign Language in their eighth grade, where Quizziz was used as a Digital Game-Based Learning tool to test vocabulary acquisition skills. In this study, students were divided into two experimental groups each as a vocabulary practice group and another as a control group. However, the results of the study showed that the experimental groups notably outperformed the control group, which demonstrated the effectiveness of digital game-based learning.

After the final learning process, it was found that students widely expressed their positive feelings about this approach, where they noted that the game elements like power-ups, competition, and instant feedback have boosted their motivation to learn. Hence, digital game-based learning has also been targeted as a way by which the students have been able to boost their scope of vocabulary acquisition in terms of learning foreign languages.
